Most HR teams know the value of DISC assessments. They help you understand communication styles, improve collaboration, and coach more effectively. But getting your team to fill one out? That’s another story.
At Winslow, we’re big believers in finding practical ways to use AI inside the tools you already use. Our CEO, Niel Robertson, recently shared a clever experiment that does exactly that—turning Slack messages into DISC profiles using ChatGPT.
It started as a weekend project. It turned into a step-by-step guide that HR teams can try for themselves.
The Idea: Your Slack messages already hold DISC insights
If you’ve ever read a few weeks’ worth of Slack threads from someone on your team, you already know how much their personality shines through. Are they direct and to the point? Curious and energetic? Thoughtful and consistent?
That’s the core idea behind this experiment. DISC assessments are based on how people communicate. So what if you could use the communication your team is already doing to generate DISC profiles—no forms, no follow-ups, just smart use of your existing data?
What you need to try it:
- Slack message data
You can export Slack messages from your workspace. Directions here. - A lightweight tool to unpack your messages
Niel built a custom site to help format and unpack the data. You can find it here. - This ChatGPT prompt
This prompt takes your data and outputs DISC scores, message counts, and reasoning per employee.
I am an HR manager trying to understand the DISC assessments of my employees. I have attached a JSON file with messages from our Slack instance for a number of employees. Please do the following: 1) Read the JSON file and identify all the unique employees that have messages. You can refer to employees using the "real_name" property in the JSON objects. 2) Count the number of messages that exist for each employee. 3) Using the messages for each employee, determine the DISC assessment for each employee. The assessment should have a score for each part: D, I, S, and C. 4) Provide a table of the results with the following information: - Employee name - The count of messages that went into the assessment for this employee - Final DISC assessment - Individual scores for each component - A summary of why you made this assessment for the employee
What this prompt gives you:
This isn’t a replacement for high-touch coaching or structured development programs. But it’s a powerful way to generate directional insights, especially for newer managers or distributed teams.
- You get a snapshot of how each person communicates.
- You can spot mismatches or team dynamics that need improvement.
- And you can build on this with further 1:1s, feedback sessions, or professional development.
Plus—it’s fun. And surprisingly accurate.
What’s next: AI for HR workflows that go further
At Winslow, we’re starting small: an AI assistant that handles repetitive HR questions inside Slack, Teams, or Gmail. But this kind of experiment points to something bigger. Winslow gives your team smart, contextual support so people can focus on the work only they can do, while agents handle the rest.
